“An intention is the quality of Consciousness you bring to an action.” – Gary Zukav, The Mind of the Soul, Responsible Choice

Your experiences are determined by your intentions, whether you have awareness of your intentions or not.  Some people think of intention like a goal.  For example you might intend to be a good provider for your family, or you might intend to lose 10 pounds before the holidays, or you might intend to start college classes next fall.  The difference between an intention and a goal is that a goal is actually an “out-tention.”

What most of us call intentions are out-tentions.  An out-tention is what happens when you apply your will to accomplish a goal.  More simply stated, it is what you are willing to do, to make something happen.  Intention is different because it is the quality of that you bring to an action.  Choosing an out-tention is choosing a physical goal.  Choosing an intention is choosing a level of consciousness.

Use your emotions to tell you if your intention was really that, or if it was an out-tention.  If you intended one thing, and then felt disappointed at the outcome, you likely had an agenda you weren’t even aware of.  For example…let’s say you gave a gift to a friend, and they never thanked you, which left you annoyed.  Now if you’d intended to give the gift truly for the sake of bringing your friend joy, you would be satisfied simply with the act of placing the gift in their hand.  Expecting anything beyond that lets you know that your intention wasn’t really about bringing joy, but about getting a certain kind of response from your friend.

When your intention is in alignment with your Authentic Self, you’ll attract others into your life who have similar intentions.  Because as we know from the , like intentions attract like intentions.  A person who has the intention of helping others, attracts people who also intend to help others; a person who has the intention of creating wealth, attracts others with the same intention; a person who has the intention of strengthening their spiritual life, attracts others who intend to strengthen their spiritual lives.

This is why it’s  key to understand the difference between intention and out-tention.  Often times when we reflect on our intentions, we find that they are not what we first thought they were.
