Is Personal Development a Destination

I know that once we start to focus on developing ourselves it can feel like our “to-do” list grows exponentially! We need to remember to focus, stay positive, forgive…and the list goes on.  So when will we ever get there? When will we “get it?”

The answer to that question is dependent on your core beliefs. Do you believe that personal development is a destination that you reach? Maybe we ascend to some sort of Nirvana. Or perhaps when we’ve reached our destination we wake up one day and finally feel like we have all the answers.

compassMaybe personal development feels more like a race. There’s a wedding or reunion coming up and you want to lose those last 5 pounds before the big event. Perhaps you make resolutions at the beginning of the New Year and then weigh in on your progress, or lack thereof each month. It’s a bit like a race - trying to beat the clock.

Or perhaps personal development means walking down a pathway, no time limit, just collecting the beautiful blooms along the way. Maybe it’s a path that you stay on, and you use it as a compass, guiding you through your day, your week, your behaviors, your life.

I don’t suggest that there is any one right answer. For me, personal development is ongoing, a journey, lessons to be gleaned as I go.

We all learn, accept, and resolve things at our own pace. One of the things I think that is vitally important when developing self is to do the things that feel good. When someone, perhaps even Dr. Anthony or some of the materials in the Rich Mind Life Strategy, makes a suggestion or offers a new thought or behavior…if you agree with the idea, then do it to the extent that you are able to, right now.  Rome wasn’t built in a day.  Little steps are still steps.

Personal development isn’t necessarily a destination that we arrive at. I think as we develop we attract more like minded folks or others who are focused on their spiritual growth.  I believe that there are many celebrations to be had along the journey, and if we race or move too quickly, we risk forfeiting the joy and feeling of success that accompanies them.

Your final point is spot on. Wanting, grasping, and lusting after that which we think we need to be, have, or do implies a sense of lacking. In my view, Personal Development as a notion is too restricted in its scope to describe what is really happening to us when we learn and grow, through mind, heart, soul, and spirit, into the unitary, authentic beings that we always already are.
