When I was little, they used to call me a “worry-wart.” I would often stop myself from taking action, because I was worried about the outcome. I was afraid. It’s pretty hard to convince a child they have nothing to fear, because fearing the unknown is something children do. Sometimes that pattern will follow us into adulthood.
What Would I Worry About if there was Nothing to Worry About?
Perhaps you have heard the story about the man who went to the psychiatrist because he was worrying himself sick and the psychiatrist, through the use of hypnosis, was able to remove the worries from the man’s mind and he went away cured and very, very happy. The following day he returned to the psychiatrist’s office in a bit of a frenzy. He said, “Doctor, I’m dreadfully worried,” and the doctor asked, “What on Earth are you worried about?” He answered, “I can’t remember what it is I’m supposed to worry about.”
I guess that’s the way many of us are. This is a worry-crazed world that we live in. Many of our present ills are due to worries, the ones that we acknowledge, and also the ones that we hide even from ourselves. Worry lowers our vibration and hampers our ability to create, it wears down our resistance to disease and despair. Worry is a killer. Why then do we worry?
Perhaps we tell ourselves that we can’t help it. Worry has become a habit. Habits can be difficult to change. But what better time than NOW is there to let go of old habits and create new ones?
Things Happen or They Don’t - Why Worry?
Try to make this one day a worriless day. If you’re anxious over any particular point, try to realize that things will either happen or not happen. Those are the two alternatives. If you are anxious about an impending event, either it will happen or it won’t happen.
That’s a pretty simple alternative and your worrying won’t make any difference, will it? It will only make you less fit to cope with the situation should it turn out as you may fear that it will. By the time the thing happens, you’ll have worn yourself down with worry, and you might have difficulty coping with it. But, if you can divorce yourself from the worry, even if the worst happens, you’ll find that you’ve got strength and courage to deal with it.
Give up the idea that things cannot go right unless you worry about them. Give up worry the way a swimmer gives up his water wings when he realizes that he can swim without them. All the time that you worry you’re simply thrashing about in the waters of life and virtually drowning yourself. Whereas, if you would simply be still and try to live this as a worriless day, you’ll be on your way to learning to swim peacefully in the seas of life and you’ll find that it’s a much better life as a result.
